SAN DIEGO - Junior Whitney Wells picked up her second win at No. 1 and freshman Katja Karrento remained perfect at No. 2 as the San Diego State women's tennis team improved to 2-1 with an 8-1 victory over Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon at SDSU's East Courts. LMU fell to 3-2 with the loss.
Karrento, Wells and SDSU senior Laura Aguero got the Aztecs off to a fast start, picking up straight-set wins in the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 positions for an early 3-0 lead. Julie Chidley gave SDSU its fourth point of the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Milica Cukulic on court No. 6 before freshman Lindsay Hedberg finally clinched the dual match for the Aztecs with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win over Penka Fileva at No. 3.
The only highlight of the afternoon for LMU came on court No. 4 as Angelena Zdorovytska defeated SDSU sophomore Katey Becker in a three-set tiebreaker 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (4) for the Lions lone point of the match.
SDSU also swept the doubles action. Wells and Aguero teamed up to defeat the LMU twosome of Edit Pakay/Fileva 8-2 at No. 1, while Emelie Bengtsson and Lisa Papi defeated Cukulic and Zdorovytska 8-5 at No. 3. LMU default in the No. 2 position due an injury.
San Diego State returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 when the Aztecs take on Long Beach State at 12 noon at SDSU's East Courts.
