SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State men's volleyball dropped a 3-1 (15-11, 13-15, 15-12, 17-16) decision to UC Irvine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday at Peterson Gym.
The Aztecs tied the contest at one game apiece, yet it was to no avail, as UC Irvine would go on to take the next two games. San Diego State stands at 1-9 overall and are winless (0-9) in conference play. Meanwhile, the Anteaters improve their record to 5-7 and 2-5 in MPSF action.
Despite the loss, SDSU sophomore middle blocker Michael DeRaffaele had a career-best outing that included 30 kills on 56 attacks for a .357 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker Sean Mackin finished with a team-high .500 hitting percentage and 27 kills. Setter John Engstrom poured in a season-best 11 kills, 11 digs and nine total blocks.
SDSU prepares for a tough road swing, which includes visits to Long Beach State on Feb. 23 followed by a trip to Provo, Utah to go against defending national champions Brigham Young on Feb. 26.
The Aztecs' next home match is on Wednesday, March 1 when they face cross-townrival UC San Diego. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Peterson Gym.
