SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Oliver Maiberger continued his roll at No. 1, leading the San Diego State men's tennis team to its first dual match victory of the 2000 season as the Aztecs defeated Santa Clara, 4-2, in the Bay Area Thursday.
SDSU improved to 1-3 with the win, while Santa Clara fell to 1-2 with the loss.
Maiberger remained perfect in dual match play and gave the Aztecs an early 1-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Bronco Lars Nelson. Junior Adam Webster had a little tougher time at No. 2, but soon followed suit with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Matt Cox.
Santa Clara came back with wins at No. 3 and 5 to tie the match at 2-2. But that's as close as the Broncos would get as the Aztecs closed out the match with a pair of three-set victories. Junior Matt Bere gave SDSU its third point of the match with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Scott Watters at No. 4, before junior Dan Castro finally clinched the win for the Aztecs by knocking off Federico Mattioli 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The doubles portion of the match was not played due to weather.
San Diego State returns to action on Friday, Feb. 18 when the Aztecs travel to Pepperdine to take on the No.8-ranked Waves. The Aztecs then return home for a Mountain West Conference dual match with Air Force on Sunday, Feb. 20. The SDSU-AF match begins at
