PROVO, Utah - Thursday night, Brigham Young scored season-high 98 points in their win over UNLV. Saturday against the Aztecs, the Cougars where held to 14 fewer. Unfortunately for San Diego State it was still too much, as the Aztecs suffered their second straight defeat and fifth in a row to BYU, 84-57 at the Marriott Center.
Freshman Kacee Wheeler led SDSU (7-15, 2-7 Mtn. West) in scoring for the second straight game with 11 points. Freshman Jamey Cox and senior Mary Apiafi contributed nine each.
Lori Cuff finished with a game-high 14 points to lead BYU (16-6, 6-3 Mtn. West).
San Diego State trailed by only six points with seven minutes to play in the first half before the Cougars went on a 16-3 run over the next 5:43 to take a 40-21 lead just over a minute before intermission. SDSU countered with a 6-2 spurt to close the stanza but still trailed by 16 at 42-26 when the two teams headed to the locker rooms.
BYU, however, opened the second half with a 21-2 run and never looked back, building as much as a 37-point lead midway through the period. The Aztecs put together a 12-0 spurt to pull within 25 points at the 7:06 mark, but could draw no closer.
San Diego State returns to action on Feb. 17, when the Aztecs host New Mexico for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Cox Arena.
