SAN DIEGO - A three-for-four performance from senior right fielder Paul Lockhart was not enough to push the San Diego State baseball team to a victory over 13th-ranked Tulane on Saturday in New Orleans, as the Green Wave handed SDSU a 4-2 loss.
The defeat marked the Aztecs' (5-5 overall) third loss in a row to a ranked opponent, and their second to the Green Wave (2-0 overall). Tulane got a strong performance from starter Jared Berkowitz, who went eight innings, striking out six while walking only one and allowing two SDSU runs. Brandon Belanger came on in the ninth to pick up his second save in as many nights.
Freshman Chris Hartshorn took the loss for the Aztecs, yielding four runs (only three of which were earned) and 10 hits in five innings. Senior Jeremy Cook came on in relief to throw three scoreless innings, but the damage had been done.
SDSU catcher Brandon Rogers' fifth-inning home run to right was his second of the year, while Lockhart, who earned Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors last week, added two doubles and an RBI.
Green Wave right fielder Aaron Feldman went two-for-five with a home run and a stolen base, while center fielder Jon Kaplan went three-for-four with an RBI and a stolen base to lead the Tulane attack.
The three-game series between the Aztecs and the Green Wave will conclude at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Tulane's Turchin Stadium.
