SAN DIEGO - Senior Henry Bonilla limited San Diego State to a pair of runs while striking out 12 over 8.1 innings to lead 13th-ranked Tulane to a 4-2 win at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans Friday evening. The gamewas the season opener for the Green Wave as the Aztecs fell to 5-4 on the season.
Junior lefty Ben Julianel started on the mound for SDSU before giving way to John Skinner in the fifth. Julianel allowed no runs on seven hits and struck out three, but was not involved in the decision. Skinner, who allowed Tulane's first two runs (one earned) in the sixth suffered his second loss of the young season.
The Aztecs got on the scoreboard first when freshman Garrett Cook connected for his first home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning. The Green Wave responded with a two-spot in both the sixth and seventh innings. SDSU cut the deficit in half with a run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Matt Recardy that scored Sean Pierce from third.
Soph Chad Chop, who went 2-for-4 on the night and was the only SDSU player with more than one hit, singled with one out in the top of the ninth. However, senior Bvrandon Belanger came in relief of Bonilla to record the final two outs and pick up the save.
The three-game series continues tomorrow afternoon as the Aztecs and Green Wave hook up for game two at 1:00 p.m. Central Time.
