Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Host San Diego State defeated 22nd-ranked Illinois-Chicago Flames, 6-5, Sunday in SDSU Tournament action.

In the Illinois-Chicago contest, the Flames dominated the game through the first three innings, scoring five runs during that period. The Aztecs, however, came alive in the fourth when Kristina Kirk double to centerfield, bringing home Kellie Labor for SDSU's first run. Kirk would go on to reach home base on a error by Flame shortstop Jen Tiffany.

After stranding three runners in the fifth, Tami Simpson breathed life into the Aztecs when she smashed a double down the rightfield line in the sixth, bringing home Vanessa Villegas. Simpson and Malina Contreras would then go on to score on an error by UIC catcher Stefanie Christoferson. Kellie Nordhagen scored the winning run on a Sarah Hershman single.

Freshmen were key for the Aztecs vs. UIC as freshman first baseman Kristina Kirk was SDSU's leading hitter, going 2-4 (.500) with one run and one RBI. Freshman pitcher Olivia Catron (1-1) earned her first collegiate victory, allowing only two hits in four and two-third's innings.

The Aztecs were not able to keep the momentum into the next game, as Long Beach State took advantage of the error-prone Aztecs.

Although the Aztecs managed two runs in the seventh, they could not overcome a grand slam by the 49er's Christina Zepeda in the fourth.

SDSU is now 1-5 and will play in the CSU Northridge Matador Invitational next weekend.
