SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego defeated San Diego State, 4-3, in a shortened game at USD. The game was called with two outs in the fifth in the fifth inning due to a one hour, 45-minute time limit placed on the contest prior to its start.
The Aztecs jumped out to an early lead when Kellie Nordhagen scored on a Tashie Agui?aga ground out. The Toreros fought back in the bottom of the first, when Torero Jade Quentin came home on a Shaunna Collo double followed by Collo's crossing home plate on a Katy Morrison ground out.
Kellie Nordhagen would tie the game in the third on a Vanessa Villegas single. One play later, Sarah Hershman put the Aztecs ahead when she singled to bring home Alexis Gutierrez. The Toreros came back to score one more run in the third when Collo hit a fly ball to leftfield, bringing home Charlie Smith.
The Toreros' fifth inning would bring controversy, however. Quentin opened the inning with a double and came home on an error by the Aztecs' Hershman. With the bases loaded and one out, USD's Desiree Collo reached first base on a fielder's choice, advancing all of the base runners. Aztec catcher Kathy Urrutia got the force out on USD's Cristina Byrne who was running home from third base. Home plate umpire Bill Lewis then called the game because of the time limit even though there were only two outs and it was still the fifth inning.
The Aztecs outhit the Toreros 8-2, but the team's four errors may have cost them the game. The loss marks the first time that USD has ever defeated SDSU in softball and the second loss for the Aztecs this year.
