SAN DIEGO - Hawaii-Hilo exploded for seven runs in the first three innings off San Diego State senior Jeremy Cook, and went on to record a 9-6 win over SDSU in the Aztecs' season opener. The Vulcans improved to 5-3 on the season
After going down 7-0, San Diego State fought back with a five-run fifth inning, and added another run in the sixth to close the margin to 7-6. However, a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh sealed the win for Hilo.
Kaholo Rickard picked up his first win of the season on the mound for UHH, going four innings while allowing no runs and striking out four.
Andy Litteral, Matt Ricardy and Edgar Gonzalez picked up two hits apiece for the Aztecs.
The teams meet in the second contest of the five-game series Friday evening Hilo.
