SAN DIEGO - San Diego State overcame a four-point deficit with 3:22 to play by scoring the game?s final nine points, as the Aztecs defeated a scrappy Texas A&-Corpus Christi squad, 57-52, in their final non-conference match up of the season at Cox Arena Monday night.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the SDSU (5-10, 0-2 Mtn. West), which returns to Mountain West Conference play on Thursday at New Mexico.
Freshmen Jamey Cox and Kacee Wheeler scored 13 points apiece to lead a balanced SDSU attack the featured four players in double figures, including junior Anita Bundage, who notched her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Atim Otii added 10 points and senior Mary Apiafi scooped up 11 boards for SDSU, which outrebounded the Islanders, 42-35.
SDSU led the game 30-29 at intermission, but found itself in a 43-34 hole after Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-10) opened the second half with a 14-4 run. The Aztecs, responded with a 12-0 spurt of their own, including six points by Wheeler, to go back on top, 46-43, at the 7:14 mark.
The Islanders, who got 13 points from Kristin Rogers and 10 from Rachel Grayson, refused to go away, however, and outscored SDSU 9-2 over the next 2:58 to go up by four at 52-48 with 4:24 to play. But A&M-CC, which shot just 32.3 percent from the field, never scored again as the Aztecs tallied nine unanswered points to secure the victory.
