Aztec Angle
? San Diego State (4-10, 0-2 Mtn. West) looks to get things back on track Monday night when it opens what will be a busy week against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) at 7 p.m. at Cox Arena. The Aztecs then return to Mountain West Conference play on Thursday at New Mexico and Saturday at Air Force.

? SDSU will be out to snap a two-game losing streak Monday night. After posting its first back-to-back wins in almost a year, the Aztecs dropped both of their games last week to open the MWC season.

? Monday night's tilt versus the Islanders will be SDSU's final non-conference game. The Aztecs are 4-8 on the year in non-league games, but 3-3 at home.

Head Coach Barb Smith
? San Diego State head coach Barb Smith is in her third season on Montezuma Mesa and owns a career record of 21-44.

? Prior to taking over as SDSU's fifth head coach in 1997, Smith spent nine years as the top assistant at the University of Colorado. During her tenure at CU, the Buffaloes won an average of 24 games per season, five Big 8 Conference championships and made eight NCAA Tournament appearances.

? She is a 1986 graduate of The Ohio State University, where she was a four-year starter at point guard and led the Buckeyes to three NCAA berths.

Most Recently - Aztecs Fall To Utah, Brigham Young
? Vs. Utah: Mary Apiafi scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and freshman Jamey Cox added 11 points, but it wasn't enough as Utah held the Aztecs to their then-lowest point production of the season en route to a 53-44 victory in the inaugural Mountain West Conference basketball game for both schools at Cox Arena Thursday night. Utah sandwiched a 19-4 run around halftime and twice led by as many as 15 points in the second half before SDSU began chipping away at the Ute advantage with 8:07 to play. SDSU used a 12-2 run over the next 6:40 to pull within five at 47-42 with 1:27 to play but could draw no closer as Utah outscored the Aztecs 6-2 in the final minute to provide the final margin.

? Vs. BYU: Offensive problems and the hot-shooting BYU Cougars proved to be too much for SDSU, as the Aztecs dropped their second MWC game, 60-37, Saturday night. SDSU's 37 points were its fewest since the Aztecs were defeated, 38-34, by Virginia on Dec. 21, 1981. Trailing 33-16 at intermission, SDSU made things interesting to open the second half, outscoring the Cougars 11-2 to pull within eight points at 35-27 with 13:23 to play. But that's as close as the Aztecs would get. BYU countered with a 9-0 run of its own to take a 44-27 lead with just over nine minutes to play. The spurt effectively put the game out of reach for SDSU as the Aztecs never again pulled closer than 16 points. Jamey Cox, who scored a team-high 11 points, was the only Aztec to finish in double figures.

About The Game
? Both teams will be looking to rebound from back-to-back losses. SDSU dropped a pair of games versus the Utah schools to open league play last week. TAMUCC is coming off a 64-60 loss to Wyoming at home on Jan. 8 and a 63-45 defeat at Texas-Arlington on Jan. 10.

About The Islanders
? After getting out to a 4-1 start to open the season, TAMUCC enters Monday's game with an 8-9 mark and has lost 3-of-4.

? Four of five Islander starters average double figures in scoring led by Texas Tech-transfer Detra Johnson (16.7 ppg).

? A&M-Corpus Christi is coached by Sheryl Estes. Estes coached the Colorado Xplosion of the now-defunct American Basketball League (ABL) to a 46-38 record over two seasons before being hired as the Islanders' first head coach on July 2, 1998.

Common Thread - Offensive Woes
? Like SDSU, which has scored a combined 81 points in its last two games, TAMUCC is struggling on the offensive end of late.

? TAMUCC is averaging 65.2 ppg for the season, however the Islanders have scored just 50.5 ppg in their last four games.

Islanders Affiliate MWC Members?
? Monday's game will be the third this season for TAMUCC against a team hailing from the Mountain West Conference. The Islanders defeated Air Force, 76-57, but fell to Wyoming, 64-60.

First Timers
? TAMUCC is in its inaugural season of women's basketball.

? The Islanders' roster is composed of eight freshman, including a pair of starters.

Homecoming Queen
? Monday's game will be a homecoming for TAMUCC freshman guard Mandie Vinck. Vinck, who hails from Chula Vista, Calif., averaged 12 points, nine assists and six steals as a senior last year at Our Lady of Peace. She was also a first team All-Western League selection as a senior. Vinck has started all 17 games so far this season for the Islanders.

SDSU-TAMUCC Series Stuff
? Monday's game will be the first-ever between SDSU and TAMUCC as the Islanders are in their first year of competition.

? The Aztecs, though, have faced 15 other schools from Texas. All-time, SDSU is 27-18 against teams hailing from the Lone Star state.

About The Game
? Thursday's meeting at 'The Pit' in Albuquerque between SDSU and New Mexico will be the 16th between the two schools.

? The Aztecs lead the all-time series by a comfortable 12-3 margin, however the Lobos have won two in row and three of the last five meetings.

? The Aztecs' last win over UNM came at the 1997 WAC Tournament in Las Vegas when SDSU defeated the Lobos 81-52.

SDSU-UNM Most Recently
? Last year, UNM knocked off SDSU 66-53 at Cox Arena and 75-51 in Albuquerque.

Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Pit?
? SDSU is 5-2 all-time in 'The Pit'. However, you have to go back to 1995 to find the Aztecs' last win over UNM in Albuquerque. That season, SDSU defeated the Lobos twice, 75-47 during the regular season and 57-39 at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. California Connections

? New Mexico has three Californians on its roster, though none hail from San Diego. They are: Sonya Bryant (Westminster), Jasmine Ewing (Tracy), and Aiyana Nash (La Habra).

Homecoming Queen (Take II)
? Although SDSU doesn't have any players who call New Mexico home, it does have a coach. Assistant coach Yvonne Sanchez grew up in New Mexico and starred at El Dorado High School in Albuquerque. In fact, Sanchez played under current New Mexico head coach Don Flanagan at El Dorado and led the Eagles to a pair of state championships. Prior to coming to SDSU, Sanchez was an assistant coach for seven seasons at New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M.

Lobos On A Roll
? New Mexico is off to a great start in 1999-2000 and enter the week with a 10-4 record (1-0 Mtn. West), including a 72-53 win at Air Force last Saturday.

? One of the better shooting teams in the MWC, the Lobos are connecting on 44.2 percent of their field goal attempts, including 38 percent from beyond the arc. Both figures rank second in the league.

? With a roster that at times goes 10 deep, UNM has produced a fairly balanced score sheet to date. Junior forward Miranda Sanchez leads the Lobos in both scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.4 rpg). She is also shooting at a 46.3 percent clip from three-point range, third-best in the MWC.

? UNM is coached by Don Flanagan. In his five years with the Lobos, he has amassed a 92-43 record, the most successful stretch in school history.

About The Game
? San Diego State and Air Force will hook up for only the fifth time ever when the two teams meet Saturday.

? The Aztecs have never lost to the Falcons and own a 4-0 mark against the Academy. In fact, SDSU's average margin of victory over the Falcons is nearly 24 points.

? SDSU is 2-0 versus Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.

We've Been Missing You
? SDSU and Air Force did not play during last year's final Western Athletic Conference season for both schools. Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the two schools since a 68-59 SDSU win on Feb. 7, 1998 in Colorado Springs.

Aztecs Hope To Extend Falcons' Misery
? If there's one team in the MWC that has gotten off to a rougher start this season than SDSU it's Air Force. The Falcons enter the week with a 3-11 record (0-1 Mtn. West), including seven straight losses.

Tough Tandem
? To date, the Falcons have been led by the senior forward tandem of Megan Thiedeman and Mollie Peters. Thiedeman is averaging 16.1 ppg and ranks fourth in the MWC in scoring, while Peters, 15.3 ppg, ranks fifth. But don't expect the Falcons to simply pound the ball in low, Thiedman and Peters have hit a combined 69 treys with Thiedman's 3.7 per game leading the league. At The Falcons' Helm

? Air Force is coached by Sue Darling. She is in he second year at the Academy and enters the week with an 8-33 record.

Noting The Aztecs

Home Cookin' Comes To An End
? The Aztecs close out a four-game home stand, their longest of the season, Monday versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. SDSU enters the week with a 3-5 record in Cox Arena, a 1-4 mark on the road and a 0-1 record in neutral site games.

Feet Don't Fail Me Now!
? Beginning with SDSU's match-up last Thursday against Utah, the Aztecs will play five games in 10 days, including a Monday night's tilt against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The SDSU-TAMUCC contest was originally scheduled for a different date, but had to be moved after the conference released its master schedule, creating the grueling stretch.

Where's The 'O'?
? No one's ever mistaken the Aztecs for Loyola Marymount of the Hank Gathers era, but there's no doubt SDSU is struggling to score points. SDSU entered last week averaging just under 60 points per game but had still managed to win two in a row and three of four. However, the Aztecs must have had a good helping of ice water on the bench against the Utah schools as SDSU scored back-to-back season-low totals for points - 44 versus Utah and 37 against BYU - and connected on just 31.5 (29-for-92) percent of its field goal attempts.

? The Aztecs' 37 points against BYU were its fewest ever at home and its lowest point total since a 38-34 loss against Virginia on Dec. 21, 1981 at the Queens College Tournament in Flushing, N.Y. SDSU's previous all-time scoring low at home was 40 versus CS Fullerton in Jan. 14, 1977, the first year of Aztec women's basketball.

Get 'Em At The Line
? If you can't score from the field you better get to the foul line and SDSU had been making its living their until last week. Prior to taking on the Utah schools, SDSU had made 41 more free throws than its opponents had even attempted - 202 made compared to 161 attempted by opponents. The numbers were even more dramatic in the last four games, as SDSU has made a combined 72 foul shots (104 attempts) compared to only 43 attempts (27 made) by the opposition. That changed last week as the Aztecs made only 19-of-29 free throws in the two games to BYU/Utah's combined 20-of-23. For the year SDSU has now made 221 free throws to its opponents' 184 attempts.

No 'O' But Plenty of 'D'
? If there's been one positive for SDSU lately it's been defense. The Aztecs have held five of their last six opponents under its scoring averages for the season, including Montana (-11.4), CS Fullerton (-4.5), TCU (-26.8), Utah (-8.9) and BYU (-9.5).

52 Pick-Up
? The number 52 appears to be key for the Aztecs this season. Through 14 games, each time SDSU has held an opponent under 52 points it has picked up a win. The trend held last week versus Utah (53-44 loss) and BYU (60-37 loss). Although the Aztecs held both teams under their scoring averages for the season by nearly 10 points each, neither was under the magic 52.

Taking Care of Rock Key
? If there's one statistic that has proven to be critical to the Aztecs' season thus far it has been turnovers. Through 14 games, San Diego State has had fewer turnovers than its opponents in all four of its wins. Conversely, the Aztecs have had more miscues than their foes in all ten losses except for the Utah game (SDSU 21, Utah 22).

Better After The Break
? San Diego State has scored more points in the second half of all but two games this season. The Aztecs scored 29 in both halves at San Francisco and just two points fewer after intermission against CS Fullerton.

? SDSU has scored 58.6 percent of its points this season after halftime compared to 41.4 percent in the first half. M The Aztecs have outscored their opponents after halftime in eight of 14 games this year, including all four wins.

Whom to Foul
? If you're looking for an Aztec to foul late in a game the pickings are mighty slim as four of SDSU's top-6 are averaging at least 74.2 percent from the stripe, including three who average better than 81 percent.

No Rest For The Weary
? With just eight scholarship players on the active roster, six Aztecs are playing over 93 percent of all minutes with SDSU's five starters (Mary Apiafi, Jamey Cox, Anita Bundage, Shannon Lee and Atim Otii) averaging at least 31 minutes per contest.

? Bundage (37.4 mpg) and Cox (36.2 mpg) are the teams leaders. Bundage has played a full 40 minutes five times this season, with Cox going the distance at Cal State Fullerton and against TCU.

May-December Duo
? Talk about your May-December relationships, senior center Mary Apiafi and freshman guard Jamey Cox are providing the Aztecs with a potent inside-outside combination. Apiafi, Ms. Inside, leads the Aztecs in both scoring (13.5) and rebounding (10.3 rpg). Cox, Ms. Outside, ranks second on the team in scoring (13.0) and leads SDSU in both three point percentage (.412) and threes made (28). In fact, at her current pace and barring injury, Cox would finish the season with 58 treys, third best on SDSU's single-season chart and fifth-best all-time.

Wonder Woman
? It's no secret that the Aztecs are riding senior Mary Apiafi on the offensive end. Still, Apiafi continues to produce both on the scoreboard and on the glass. SDSU's leading scorer in seven games this season, Apiafi has scored in double figures in 10-of-14 games, including three games with 20 or more points. She also has six double-doubles to her credit.

Can You Say Turnaround?
? After averaging just 4.8 ppg and 5.7 rpg last season, Mary Apiafi is putting up all-conference-type numbers in 1999-00. Through 14 games, Apiafi ranks eighth in the league in scoring (13.5), second in rebounding (9.9), fourth in field goal percentage (.508), and 13th in free throw percentage (.742).

She Can Play Defense, Too
? Apiafi is proving that she can be a force on the defensive end as well. The MWC's second-leading shot blocker with 1.9 bpg and fifth-best thief (2.0 spg), Apiafi held Utah's Lauren Beckman to just five points and had the Ute center in foul trouble all game long. Beckman entered the game as the Ute's leading scorer averaging 12.8 ppg.

Playing Like A Vet
? Freshman guard Jamey Cox continues to prove she is one of the MWC's top newcomers. Through 14 games, Cox is second on the team and 11th in the conference in scoring with a 13.0 ppg average. She has also finished in double figures in 11 of her 13 games, including five in a row.

From Way Downtown
? Maybe Jamey Cox should limit her shots to three-pointers. Cox, who leads the Aztecs with 28 treys, is hitting on 41.2 percent of her shots from beyond the arc, fifth-best in the MWC. Conversely, she is shooting just 39.1 percent on twos.

? Cox nearly tied a school record in her 30-point outing at Cal State Fullerton, hitting seven of her 10 three-point attempts. The SDSU school record of eight by Falisha Wright was set on Feb. 25, 1993 at Wyoming.

Dishing It Out
? Junior guard Shannon Lee continues to hold down the top spot in the Mountain West Conference assist race. Through 14 games, Lee has 74 assists (5.1 apg). No one else in the league is above 4.7 per game. Lee, who also ranks in the MWC top-10 in steals, has dished out at least six assists seven times, including seven against Idaho St., Portland and UCLA and a career-best 10 versus TCU.
