SAN DIEGO - Brigham Young freshman Erin Thorn led all scorers with 18 points, including four three pointers, as the Cougars handed San Diego State a 60-37 loss at Cox Arena Saturday night. SDSU?s 37 points were its fewest since the Aztecs were defeated, 88-38, at Hawaii on Jan. 10, 1998.
?It?s been the story of our last two games,? said SDSU head coach Barb Smith, whose Aztecs where held to just 44 points by Utah Thursday. ?We?ve been playing solid on the defensive end, it?s just not translating to our offensive. We?re just too tentative.?
Trailing 33-16 at intermission, SDSU (4-10, 0-2 Mtn. West) made things interesting to open the second half, outscoring the Cougars 11-2 to pull within eight points at 35-27 with 13:23 to play. But that?s as close as the Aztecs would get.
BYU (12-3, 2-0 Mtn. West) countered with a 9-0 run its own, including five points by Thorn, to take a 44-27 lead with just over nine minutes to play. The spurt effectively put the game out of reach for SDSU as the Aztecs never again pulled closer than 16 points.
Freshman Jamey Cox, who scored a team-high 11 points, was the only Aztec to finish in double figures.
SDSU will try to snap its two-game losing streak on Monday, Jan. 17 when the Aztecs host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tip-off from Cox Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
