SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Anita Bundage scored a career-high 18 points and senior Mary Apiafi tied a career-best with 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to get past Loyola Marymount as the Lions knocked off the Aztecs, 62-51, at Cox Arena Sunday afternoon.
LMU, which had never defeated the Aztecs if four previous tries, evened its record to 4-4 with the win. The loss was the fifth in a row for SDSU (1-7), which was forced to play without starting point guard Jamey Cox. Cox, the Aztecs' second-leading scorer at 12.1 ppg, has not practiced since suffering a concussion at UCLA 10 days ago. She is listed as questionable for San Diego State's game against Montana on Tuesday night.
"Once again we played well in spurts," said SDSU head coach Barb Smith. "But (LMU) just wanted it more. We need to continue to work on playing more consistently from start to finish."
A lack of consistency once again played havoc with the Aztecs' game plan as SDSU was held to a season-low 14 points on 5-for-23 shooting (21.7 percent) in the first half and trail by nine, 23-14, at the break.
True to form, the Aztecs got things headed back in the right direction after intermission, using a 10-2 run midway through the second half to pull within a point at 41-40 with 9:47 to play. The Lions, however, answered with a 15-2 spurt of their own over the next five minutes to push the lead back to double digits at 56-42. LMU's Bryn Britton led the charge with seven of her 20 points during the run.
SDSU twice sliced the LMU advantage to seven points during the final two minutes but could draw no closer as the Lions were solid down the stretch from the foul line, connecting on 6-of-8 free throws in game's final minute.
LMU's Rosa Bernasconi led all scores with 22 points, including 12 in the first half.
