Women's Soccer Falls to BYU in MWC Title Game

Nov. 6, 1999

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in overtime to Brigham Young in the championship game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Saturday at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

The Aztecs (15-6 overall) jumped on the Cougars (20-3 overall) first when sophomore defender Fay deLeon bent a corner kick from the left side directly into the net at the 18:10 mark.

BYU would rebound, however, controlling the action for the remainder of the first half. Despite dictating the tempo of the game, the Cougars were not able to beat SDSU senior goalkeeper Katherine Judkins, who made 12 saves on the day, many of which in spectacular fashion.

The second half opened much like how the first half ended, with BYU peppering Judkins with shots. A golden opportunity presented itself for the Cougars at the 65:09 mark when Aztec sophomore defender Carrie Hawkins collided with a BYU forward in the air in the penalty box, which prompted referee Dinesh Singh to award the Cougars with a controversial penalty shot. Cougar midfielder Sara Reading placed the penalty kick past Judkins and into the lower left corner of the net, tying the game.

Following Reading's goal, BYU staved off a quick outburst from SDSU and continued to control the action, but Judkins kept the score tied and the game went into overtime.

Just seven minutes into overtime, the Cougars ended the game when defender Staci Reynolds played a ball into the box from the right side, where it was quickly passed by Reading to midfielder Kim Lowe, who in turn put the ball in the net, giving BYU the win.

The Aztecs will now wait to find out who they will play against in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The tournament brackets will be announced tomorrow at 7 p.m.
