Softball Does Battle with Media

Nov. 13, 1999

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team escaped Saturday's inaugural Media Game with a 2-1 victory at SDSU Field.

KNSD-TV Sports Director Jim Laslavic scored the only run for the media while catcher Kelly Bunker and rightfielder Kellie Labor crossed homeplate for the Aztecs. San Diego State pitcher Sandra Durazo earned the win.

Several familiar faces from San Diego-area media outlets joined Laslavic on the media team. KFMB-TV's John Howard, KNSD's Marty Levin, Joie Bonilla and Joe Lizura, and Cox 4's Jane Mitchell and Jason Bott all suited up on behalf of the media.

United States Olympic softball team member Sheila Cornell Douty made a special appearance at the event, batting several times for the media squad.

This first-ever media game was governed by NCAA fast-pitch softball rules and allowed the media a glimpse of what it's like to play a fast-pitch game. The Aztecs permitted the media to borrow a pitcher and catcher for the first five innings before Senior World writer Danny Millsap relieved the SDSU pitching staff of its duties for the media team.

All money donated to the event will go to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation.
