Hawker Paces Cross Country at NCAA Regionals.

Nov. 13, 1999

San Diego State junior Sophia Hawker ran a personal-best time of 17:57 in five kilometers and led and Aztecs to an 18th-place finish out of 28 teams at the NCAA West Regional Championships Saturday in Troutdale, Ore.

Hawker finished 24th out of 196 runners and was honored as a member of the all-West Region team for her performance. Freshman sensation Jennifer Stakiw equaled her career-best with a time of 18:49, which was good enough for second for SDSU. Fellow freshman Alicia Stewart was third for the Aztecs with a time of 18:59. This was the second time this season that three Aztecs have finished with times under 19 minutes.

Although San Diego State did not qualify for the NCAA Championships as a team, it is possible that Hawker may be invited to compete at the championships on Nov. 22, in Bloomington, Ind., as an individual competitor. That decision will be made by the NCAA selection committee this Monday, Nov. 15.
