Scene Setter
The San Diego State Aztecs, 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Mountain West Conference action, return to play Saturday, hosting the Brigham Young Cougars at 6:07 p.m. The BYU contest is sandwiched in between a pair of open weeks for the Aztecs. San Diego State will not play again until a Nov. 20th trip to UNLV.

Storyline
San Diego State tries to play the role of spoiler as the Cougars hit southern California in hot pursuit of the first-ever Mountain West Conference football title. The San Diego State contest is part of a tough closing stretch for BYU that includes a trip to Wyoming and a closing battle with Utah. Brigham Young is the first ranked opponent to visit Qualcomm since No. 17 Arizona came to town Sept. 24, 1998. The Aztecs are hosting the Cougars for the first time since 1993.

Defense Again
For the second straight game, the Aztecs will be involved in a contest that features the two best defenses in the Mountain West Conference. Last time out, San Diego State had the nation's 12th best defense while Utah entered ranked 20th nationally in total defense. This week, BYU's defense is ranked 11th nationally and San Diego State is 17th. Incidentally, San Diego State and Utah combined for over 900 yards of offense.

Aztec Angle
? The Aztecs, with three games remaining, will be looking to close 1999 on a high note. San Diego State has fallen out of the race for the title due to a series of near misses.

? In 1999, San Diego State has had five games decided in the fourth quarter (including Southern California). The Aztecs have just one win (Colorado State) to show for their efforts.

? Three losses have come by a total of seven points, including a pair of Mountain West Conference losses by just four points.

? The key stat of the year could be turnovers. SDSU has 18 turnovers through eight games after turning the ball over 20 times during last year?s drive to the Las Vegas Bowl.

? The Aztecs are 2-3 in games following bye weeks under Ted Tollner.Hall of Fame Weekend.

? San Diego State University will induct a new class into its Hall of Fame Saturday afternoon. Lennie Clements (golf), Laura De Snoo (track and field), Harry Hodgetts (basketball), Carol Plunkett (tennis coach) and Wendy Wheat (volleyball) will be honored.

Ranking The Opposition
? Brigham Young marks the second Top 25 foe on the Aztec schedule this season. San Diego State dropped a 24-21 contest at No. 17 Southern California Sept. 18th.

? The Aztecs last defeated a ranked opponent on Nov. 7, 1996, when they edged No. 16 Wyoming, 28-24.

? San Diego State opened its 1998 bowl season by losing to three Top 25 teams: No. 20 Wisconsin 26, San Diego State 14, No. 22 USC 35, San Diego State 6, No. 17 Arizona 35, SDSU 16.

Conference Calls
? The Aztecs are 10-5 in their last 15 conference games.

? San Diego State has dropped two straight conference home games. The Aztecs have not lost three straight Qualcomm games to conference opponents since the 1993 and 1994 seasons. SDSU closed 1993 with home losses to BYU(45-44) and Wyoming (43-38). The 1994 conference home schedule began with losses to Air Force (36-35) and Utah (38-22).

Aztec Streaks and Stuff
? The Aztecs are 25-of-27 in the red zone this season (15 touchdowns and 10 field goals).

? SDSU?s only dry trips into the red zone were a botched field-goal attempt at CSU and a fumble on the final drive at Utah.

? Through eight games, San Diego State has 1,619 passing yards, surpassing by three yards its total for the 1998 season.

? San Diego State?s 303 rushing yards at Utah marked the Aztecs? best ground attack since gaining 349 at home against New Mexico on Oct. 17, 1998.

By The Numbers
? San Diego State is 2-1 in games in which it does not commit a turnover and 1-4 when it gives the ball away at least once.

? San Diego State?s 497 yards at Utah marked its second best offensive day of the season. At Kansas, SDSU gained 572 yards.

? In the Aztecs? last two losses, they have outgained the opposition by a total of 259 yards.

A Case For The Defense
? The San Diego State defense is making a strong case as one of the best units in school history.

? San Diego State is currently 17th nationally and second in the Mountain West in total defense, allowing 302 yards per game.

? SDSU is 25th nationally against the rush, giving up 115.3 yards per contest.

? Five of San Diego State?s eight opponents have been held below 300 yards of total offense and only four of the last 13 opponents have reached 300 yards.

? Only two individuals have rushed for 100 yards against SDSU this season (Mike Thiessen of Air Force and Mike Anderson of Utah).? Every starting defensive lineman has a sack.

? San Diego State has picked off a pass in five of its eight games this season.

? The Aztec defense has allowed two touchdowns or less in five of the eight games this season and in 12 of the last 17 games overall.

Passing Marks
? The Aztecs have already surpassed last year?s total of TD passes (eight) with 12 this season.

? San Diego State has seven touchdowns on plays that have covered at least 40 yards and nine scores have come from at least 20 yards out. ? Six players have touchdown catches in 1999, compared to four for all of 1998.

Time Management
? Along with its big-play ability, the Aztecs have become adept at the sustained drive. Through seven games, San Diego State has:

* Scored on 16 drives that covered at least 60 yards.

* Scored on 12 drives that have covered at least 70 yards.

* Scored on eight drives that covered at least 80 yards.

* Had three touchdown drives that took over six minutes off the clock.

Rushing To Wins
? In the 1990s, San Diego State is 45-20-2 when it has a runner break the 100-yard mark, including a 25-9 record under Ted Tollner.

? As a team, the Aztecs are 46-13-1 when they rush for 150 yards, including a 27-6 mark under Tollner.

Series History
? San Diego State and Brigham Young are meeting for the 24th time, dating back to the first meeting on Nov. 15, 1947, in San Diego, which the Aztecs won, 32-7.

? The Cougars lead the all-time series, 17-5-1, including four straight wins. Three of those wins came in Provo. The last time SDSU defeated BYU was 1992, by the score of 45-38.

? The Aztecs are 4-5-1 when facing the Cougars in San Diego with their last win in 1988, (28-15).

? In the last meeting in San Diego, the Cougars won a shootout, 45-44, and then later returned to San Diego for a Holiday Bowl matchup against Ohio State. BYU lost that contest, 28-21.

San Diego State-BYU Last Time ? Oct. 29, 1998, Cougar Stadium
? Brigham Young snapped San Diego State's four-game winning streak, shutting out the Aztecs 13-0 in an ESPN Thursday Night telecast. It was SDSU's 11th loss in 12 tries in Cougar Stadium.

? The Cougars jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after a Brian Russell pass was intercepted by Brian Gray and returned 39 yards for a touchdown. BYU extended its lead to 10-0 on its next possession when kicker Owen Pochman connected on a 46-yard field goal. Pochman also hit a 40-yard field goal midway through the second quarter to put BYU ahead, 13-0, just before the half.

? Rain fell steadily throughout the second half and neither club could make any headway. SDSU had two opportunities inside BYU's 10, but failed on both attempts. The Cougar defense held the Aztecs to an all-time low 122 yards of offense, including 42 yards passing.

? The Aztecs were blanked for the first time since 1985.

San Diego State Head Coach Ted Tollner
? Ted Tollner is in his sixth season as head coach of the Aztec football program. In 1998, Tollner was recognized as the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division "Coach of the Year" for his efforts in leading SDSU to 7-5 record, a share of the WAC Pacific Division championship and the school's first bowl appearance in seven years.

? He has compiled a 35-31 (.530) record at SDSU. In his career, Tollner has amassed a 61-51-1 (.539) record, which includes four bowl berths, including a win in the 1984 Rose Bowl at USC.

? Tollner is 0-3 against BYU, since his arrival to SDSU in 1994.

? Tollner has posted a 9-17-1 all-time record in games against ranked opponents. At SDSU, he has accumulated a 1-11 mark versus ranked opponents. While at USC he compiled a record of 8-6-1 against the nation?s elite.

? In the spring of 1996, Tollner signed a 10-year contract with San Diego State University, an agreement unprecedented in the California State University system.

? Prior to being named SDSU's 14th head football coach, Tollner served eight years as an Aztec assistant (1973-80), under Claude Gilbert, now SDSU's defensive coordinator. The 59-year-old Tollner also spent seven years as an NFL assistant coach (Buffalo Bills - 1987, San Diego Chargers - '89-91, Los Angeles Rams - '92-93).

Brigham Young Head CoachLaVell Edwards
? LaVell Edwards in his 28th season at the helm of the Brigham Young football program. Edwards is 250-92-3 during that time.

? Edwards won a national title in 1984 and was named college football's Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1984. Since 1972, he has led BYU to 21 bowl appearances, including a current string of 17 straight.

? Edwards needs five more wins to tie Nebraska's Tom Osborne for sixth on the all-time Division I coaches list.

Scouting The Cougars
? Brigham Young enters this week's game with a 7-1 overall record and is the only unbeaten team in the Mountain West Conference at 4-0. The Cougars held off a late rally by Air Force for a 27-20 win last week in Provo, giving LaVell Edwards his 250th career victory.

? Cougar quarterback Kevin Feterik completed 24-of-31 passes for 336 yards and two touchdowns. Feterik was nearly perfect in the first half, completing his first 10 passes and finishing 14-of-15 for 188 yards with a 14-yard touchdown pass.

? After eight games, Feterik leads the Mountain West in total offense, averaging 320.5 yards per game, including 2,621 passing yards for 20 touchdowns. He has completed 204-of-322 passes for a 142.7 passing efficiency, which ranks sixth nationally.

? As a team, BYU enters the contest ranked 11th nationally in total offense, averaging 458.4 yards a contest and 20th in scoring (33.5).

Local Ties
? In 1981, San Diego State head coach Ted Tollner spent one year under LaVell Edwards at Brigham Young. That year, he served as the quarterbacks coach and helped All-American Jim McMahon lead the nation in passing. McMahon was the first recipient of the Davey O'Brien Award.

? Brigham Young has three players that hail from the San Diego area, including sophomore wide receiver Todd Barker from Encinitas (San Dieguito HS), freshman linebacker Ammon Mauga from Oceanside (Oceanside HS), and senior defensive tackle Andrew Nash, a native of Poway (Poway HS).

? Cougar safeties coach Barry Lamb spent five years as an assistant coach for the Aztecs from 1989-93, Lamb served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Last Time Out
? Larry Ned rushed for a career-high 203 yards on 18 carries and Nate Tandberg booted three field goals, but turnovers and an inability to turn long drives into touchdowns was too much to overcome as the Aztecs fell to 3-5, 1-3 Mountain West, in a 38-16 loss at Utah.

? As a team, the Aztecs gained 303 yards on the ground, their best rushing performance since gaining 349 at home against New Mexico on Oct. 17, 1998. SDSU also outgained Utah, 497 to 440.

? After trailing 21-13 at halfitme, SDSU cut Utah?s lead to just five points at 21-16 on a 30-yard Tandberg field goal, his third of the day, with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter. Utah, however, answered with a field goal of its own in the opening minutes of the final period before scoring two touchdowns in the final 3:08 after Aztec turnovers.

? Senior Lonny Mitchell led the Aztec receiving corps with three catches for 101 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown bomb in the second quarter.

? Opening the game at strong safety, junior Brian Russell became the first Aztec to start on both offense and defense in the same season since the day of the two-way player in the early 1960?s. Russell, who was SDSU?s starting quarterback in the first two games of the season, finished as the Aztecs? second-leading tackler with 10 stops.

? Tandberg connected on field goals of 42, 32 and 30 yards. It marked the second time this season that the junior has drilled three field goals in a game. Tandberg also booted three against Air Force.

? Senior wide receiver and kick return specialist Damon Gourdine?s Aztec career ended at Utah when he tore ligaments in his right foot while being tackled on his third reception of the game in the first quarter. Gourdine is SDSU?s leading receiver this season with 38 catches for 439 yards and four touchdowns.

Aztecs At A Glance

Ned Goes Off
? Larry Ned had a career day at Utah, rushing for 203 yards on 18 attempts (11.3 ypc). It was SDSU?s first 200-yard rushing outing since Jonas Lewis turned the trick at Fresno State last season with 253 yards on 40 carries. The performance was Ned?s third 100-plus rushing game of the season and seventh of his career.

Ned Nuggets
Despite splitting time with teammate Jonas Lewis, Ned:

? Leads the Aztecs in rushing with 732 yards on 124 carries (5.9 ypc).? Ranks third in the Mountain West Conference in rushing with an average of 91.5 ypg.

? Has a team-leading eight touchdowns and is second on the team in scoring with 48 points.

? Has rushed for 405 yards in the last three games.

Gourdine Gone
? With his three catches against the Utes, Gourdine extended his consecutive games with a reception to 12. His last game without a catch was on Oct. 29, 1998, at BYU. He had at least three receptions in each of the games in the streak and in 14 of the last 15 games of his career.

Hawley Hype
? Quarterback Jack Hawley registered his fourth straight game with a touchdown pass at Utah, with a 75-yard scoring strike to Lonny Mitchell. The junior, who took over the starting job in game three at USC, now has thrown 10 touchdown pass on the season, including five that have covered at least 40 yards.

? Hawley, who threw for a season-best 343 yards and three scores at Kansas, is now 113-for-205 (55 percent) for 1,440 yards and ranks third in the Mountain West Conference in both passing (175.5 ypg) and TD passes (10), despite starting only six games. He also ranks third in the conference in total offense, averaging 184.6 ypg.

Tandberg Tallies
? Junior Nate Tandberg is enjoying a break-out season in 1999. To date, Tandberg has connected on 12 of his 15 field goals attempts, including a perfect 10-of-10 inside 40 yards. He is also 21-for-21 on extra points. Last season, Tandberg connected on just eight field goals for the entire season (8-14).

? Tandberg?s 80-percent conversion rate on field goals is the best in the Mountain West Conference among kickers with at least 10 attempts.? In SDSU?s last nine games, dating back to the Aztecs? 34-29 win over UTEP on Nov. 21 1998, Tandberg has been good on 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) field goal attempts.

Duran Duran
? After being injured on the opening kickoff of the season and missing the following three games, outside linebacker Michael Duran has been a man on a mission since his return. Against Utah, Duran finishing with a game-high 12 tackles (nine solo), including six tackles for loss.

? In only four full games, Duran ranks seventh on the team in tackles with 34, including eight that have come behind the line of scrimmage.

Little Big Man
? Jerome Haywood had another strong game at Utah. Despite his stature, Haywood checks in at only 5-9, the sophomore has not only consistently clogged up the middle, but in recent weeks has become a playmaker. Selected by Sports Illustrated as one of the nation?s top ?little guys?, Haywood was credited with eight tackles against the Utes. That performance comes on the heels of a career-high nine-tackle outing against Colorado State. For the season, he has recorded 39 tackles ? second on the team among defensive linemen? a figure that already exceeds his 30 tackles in 1998.

Iron Men
? Senior center Mike Malano and senior defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila each extended their consecutive starts streaks against Utah. Malano has now started 43 straight, while on the other side of the ball, Gbaja-Biamila is currently in the midst of a 32-game starting streak.Aztec Record Watch

Rico Curtis
? With eight tackles at Utah, senior strong safety Rico Curtis now has 65 stops for the season and 337 (7.9 per game) in his career. That figure ranks second on SDSU?s all-time tackles chart. Curtis, a senior, trails only former Aztec great Whip Walton, who tallied 407 tackles from 1974-77. Curtis posted a career-high 14 stops on Oct. 2, 1999, against Air Force.

That number surpasses Mike Douglass, who posted 26 from 1976-77. Though he has been held without a sack in the last three games, Gbaja-Bamila still ranks second in the Mountain West Conference with eight for minus 72 yards this year.

Jonas Lewis
? Senior Jonas Lewis continued his climb up SDSU?s all-time rushing chart last week with 88 yards on 17 carries. He now ranks fourth in rushing with 2,503 yards and needs just 117 more to move into SDSU?s top three. His 17 carries also moved him within 19 of the second slot. With 532 for his career, he needs just 20 more to pass Wayne Pittman (551 rushes from 1991-94) and take sole possession of second place. Both records are currently held by Aztec legend Marshall Faulk, who rushed for 4,589 yards on 766 attempts between 1991-93. For the season, Lewis has 290 yards on 61 carries (4.8 ypc).

? Wide receiver and return specialist Damon Gourdine?s Aztec career came to an end at Utah thanks to a season-ending foot injury. However, Gourdine?s final numbers will live on as the senior ranks in SDSU?s career lists in both kickoff return yardage and punt return yardage. With 816 yards for his career, Gourdine is eighth on SDSU?s all-time kickoff return yardage chart. Monte Gilbreath, who returned kickoffs for 1,505 yards from 1986-89, is SDSU?s all-time leader.

? In 1999, the senior has returned 10 punts for 54 yards and ranks 10th all-time in that category with 348 yards on 26 returns (13.1 average). Ray Peterson is SDSU?s career leader with 1,201 punt return yards from 1992-95.

? Gourdine also just missed moving into the top-10 in career receptions. With three catches for 37 yards at Utah, Gourdine finished his career with 114 receptions. That figure is just 11 behind Webster Slaughter, whose 122 receptions ranks 10th all-time at SDSU.
