SAN DIEGO - Junior Whitney Wells advanced in Flight 1 Singles and newcomer Lindsay Hedberg pulled a big upset with 6-2, 6-2 win over Arizona's Vanessa Able to move on in Flight II, as five different Aztecs were victorious in the opening round of the SDSU Fall Women?s Tennis Classic on the East Courts at San Diego State, Friday. No.1-ranked Zuzana Lesenarova and No. 25 Katarina Valkyova of San Diego also advanced in Flight I, as local teams dominated the opening day?s action.
?I though out singles play was very strong today,? said SDSU coach Peter Mattera. ?But we struggled a little in doubles. Overall, it was a good effort for our first time out. The next two days are shaping up to be very exciting.?
Other Aztecs moving on to Saturday?s semifinals in their respective flights were, Katja Karrento in Flight II and Julie Chidley and Emelie Bengtsson in Flight IV.
In the afternoon session, Chidley teamed with Lisa Papi in Flight II Doubles to produce the only doubles victory of the day for SDSU with an 8-0 whitewash of Arizona?s Brook Taylor and USD?s Erica Pyne, as three Aztec tandems went down to defeat. As expected, USD?s No. 4-ranked doubles tandem of Lesenarova and Valkyova easily rolled to victory in their opening round match, defeating the UCSB duo of Deb Pepkowitz and Dana Mazza, 8-0.
Action at the SDSU Fall Classic continues Saturday at 9 a.m. with semifinal matches in all flights.
