SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women?s soccer team won its fifth straight game and seventh in eight tries when it edged Mississippi, 2-1 on Sunday in Oxford Miss.
The Aztecs (14-5 overall, 5-1 Mountain West Conference) controlled the first half, and got on the board first when sophomore midfielder Kaycee McElree headed in a corner kick at the 29:42 mark. However, the Rebels (12-6 overall, 4-5 Southeastern Conference) answered just five minutes later, when Ole Miss forward Bridget Brooks beat SDSU senior goalkeeper Katherine Judkins from two yards out.
With the score deadlocked at one late in the game and the possibility of overtime looming, Aztec senior forward Lori LaCoursiere scored the game-winner at the 80:53 mark when she finished off an open run on goal.
With the win, the Aztecs came out of the Ole Miss Soccer Classic with a 2-0 record (SDSU shut out Kansas, 3-0 on Saturday). Sunday?s win also marked the Aztecs? first-ever win over an SEC opponent. SDSU?s streak of not allowing an opposing team to score more than one goal in a game was extended to eight games. In that time, the Aztecs have compiled a 7-1 record and have outscored the opposition, 22-3.
SDSU will next prepare for the first-ever Mountain West Conference Tournament, which will begin on Nov. 3 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. As the number one seed in the tournament, the Aztecs have a first-round bye and will not play on Wednesday. SDSU will open tournament action when it faces the winner of the Air Force-UNLV game at 2 p.m. on Thursday. The Aztecs shut out both the Falcons and the Rebels when they played earlier in the season, handing Air Force a 2-0 defeat in Colorado Springs on Oct. 8 and pounding UNLV, 4-0 in Las Vegas on Oct. 24.
