Men's Soccer Falls To New Mexico

SAN DIEGO - Defender John Irwin converted a rebound in the 73rd minute, and the New Mexico Lobos went on to defeat San Diego State, 1-0 in a game played Friday afternoon at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

The win improved New Mexico to 7-8-1 overall (2-2-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation). The loss was the Aztecs? fifth straight and dropped their season mark to 4-12 (0-5-0 MPSF).

The game was evenly played with SDSU having the advantage in the first half and the Lobos possessing more of the play after the break.

UNM midfielder Ryan Turnello set up the winning goal when he broke free in the box and hit a hard low shot from 15 yards that Aztec goalie Brian Barnes was able to parry away. However, Irwin collected the rebound and slotted it home.

Barnes was credited with five saves on the day while Lobo goalkeeper Chad Nelson had three. UNM outshot San Diego State 16-10 (11-3 in the second half.

Next up for the Aztecs is a trip to Las Vegas to face UNLV on Sunday October 31, at noon.
