San Diego -
The San Diego State men's golf team ran away with the team title at the first ever Real Del Mar Classic, played on the Real Del Mar Golf Resort in Baja, Mexico. SDSU, host of the Rel Del Mar Classic, fired a final score of 874 to finish 16 strokes ahead of cross-town rival San Diego, who finished second with a team score of 890.
The Aztecs were bolstered by the play of junior Scott Piercy, who won his second individual medialist title of the season and his second in the past three weeks. The native of Las Vegas, Nev., shot a 213 to finish three-under par on the par-72 course. Piercy won the Pepperdine STRATA Intercollegiate Tournament earlier this month and shot a final round of 71 (-1) this afternoon that included four birdies on a very narrow course that measured 6,403 yards.
Teammate Lars Johansson, a freshman from Helsingborg, Sweden, finished tied for second with Cullen Brasfield of San Diego with a one-under par 215. Other Aztec scorer's include team captain Magnus Carlsson, who fired a 224 (+8), good for a tie for 13th place with four other competitors. Freshman Luis Assemat, a native of Tijuana, Mexico and junior Ryan Donovan, a Yorba Linda native, each tied for 28th place with a final score of 230 (+14).
