SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men?s soccer team came back from being a goal down and a man down only to lose to Cal State Northridge, 5-4, in overtime at the ARCO Olympic Training Center on Sunday afternoon. The loss drooped the Aztecs to 4-9-0 (0-2 MPSF) on the season while the CSN evened its record at 7-7-0 (1-3 MPSF).
SDSU took a quick lead in the high-scoring contest as Abraham Martinez converted a cross from Alan Fiedler in the ninth minute. CSN evened the scoring with a Federico Arroyo penalty kick in the 27th minute after a hand ball in the box. However, the Aztecs regained the lead just two minutes later when Milton Economy was tripped in the box, and freshman defender Kirk Fonseca converted the ensuing penalty kick.
With the game seemingly under control, the Aztecs suffered a blow when forward Matt Williams was sent off with a red card just before the halftime whistle, reducing SDSU to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
Northridge capitalized on their manpower advantage with goals in the 67th and 68th minutes by Michael Preis and Arroyo respectively. But SDSU refused to giver in, knotting the score on a header by Economy off a free kick by teammate Kyle Wiggs in the 72nd minute..
The Aztecs took a 4-3 lead with just 35 seconds remaining when senior Darren Parker beat the defense and sent a low cross to David Beltran who knocked the ball home. SDSU?s joy was short-lived, however, as Arroyo scored off a free kick from the top of the box with just eight second left in regulation.
The team?s played evenly through 24 minutes of overtime until CSN?s Luis Castro dribbled through the top of the box to hit the game-winner from 10 yards.
SDSU now faces games at nationally-ranked Cal State Fullerton and UCLA next weekend before returning to the Olympic Training Center for their final home game of the season against New Mexico in October 29th.
