SAN DIEGO - The 24th-ranked San Diego State women?s soccer team claimed an important Mountain West Conference victory when it upset 11th-ranked Brigham Young, 2-0 on Saturday at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
Despite being outshot, 13-5, the Aztecs (10-5 overall, 3-1 Mountain West) were able to control a good deal of the action, keeping the high-powered Cougars (14-3 overall, 3-1 Mountain West) at bay for the majority of the game. BYU, who was coming off a 7-0 pounding of UNLV on Thursday, came out looking sluggish. SDSU controlled the tempo for the opening 30 minutes. Neither team manufactured any serious scoring chances in the opening stanza, and the game was scoreless at the half.
The second half opened with BYU controlling the action, but the Aztecs weathered the storm and took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Lori LaCoursiere scored after running a give-and-go with sophomore midfielder Kaycee McElree that brought Cougar goalkeeper Jennifer Waldron off her line.
Just two minutes later, SDSU put the game away when senior midfielder Megan Mattes headed in a cross from sophomore forward Kate Qually to give the Aztecs a 2-0 lead.
Despite pulling out the win, SDSU suffered a setback, as junior midfielder Danielle Small sustained a sprained right knee. Small, who was going to miss the Aztecs? next three games because she was going to play for the Australian national team in a tournament in China, should return for the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
BYU also had one of its better players leave the game with an injury, as senior forward Maren Hendershot, who was an All-American last year, left the game with 22 minutes remaining with an injury to her left hamstring.
SDSU will return to action when it travels to Albuquerque, NM to take on New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22.
