SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men?s soccer team dropped a tight 1-0 decision to UC Santa Barbara in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams. The victory improved the Gauchos to 8-5-0 (1-0 MPSF) on the season while the Aztecs fell to 4-8 (0-1 MPSF).
After a scoreless first half, UCSB made a breakthrough when Chris Schwandt and Joe Hubay-Dies worked a give and go that allowed Schwandt top score the game?s lone goal in the 60th minute.
Both teams took 11 shots with Gaucho goalkeeper Stewart Sanders making four saves to one for SDSU?s Brian Barnes. The Aztecs played the final 24 minutes with 10 men after defender Ryan Cook received a red card for a rough challenge on a Gaucho defender.
San Diego State continues home MPSF action when Cal State Northridge visits the ARCO Olympic Training Center for a 3:00 p.m. game on Sunday, October 17. The Aztecs will be looking to avenge an earlier 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Matadors in which CSN scored in the game?s final 17 seconds.
