Sept. 30, 1999
SAN DIEGO - U.S International got a pair of goals from sophomore forward Stuart May and went on to defeat San Diego State, 2-1, despite playing with only 10 men for almost the entire second half. The win improved USIU?s season record to 4-7 while the Aztecs fell to 3-6.
SDSU had the game?s first chance to score when a penalty kick was awarded for a foul in the box just four minutes into the game. But Kyle Wiggs? shot was saved by Globe Runner goalkeeper Jared Saron, the first of his 10 saves on the day.
May?s first goal was set up by a through-ball from midfielder Victor Reyes. May took the pass in stride and beat SDSU goalie Brian Barnes to the lower right corner. Ten minutes later, May struck again when he picked a ball at the top of the box, beat one defender, and hit a low hard shot to the left of Barnes for a 2-0 lead at the half.
USIU was reduced to 10 players when midfielder Joao Mott received his second yellow card of the game and was then shown the red by the referee four minutes into the second half. The Aztecs went on to outshoot the Globe Runners 25-8, and their persistence paid off when midfieldier Milton Economy was able to head home off a throw in by Ralph Dartt. The USIU goal was under siege for the final 15 minutes, but SDSU was unable to break through for a second goal.
The Aztecs return to action on Sunday (October 3) when they visit Cal State Northridge for a game at 6:00 pm. San Diego State will then have a rematch with U.S. International next Saturday, October 9, at USIU at 3:00 pm
