Aztecs Open Mountain West Play vs. Air Force
The San Diego State Aztecs, 2-2 after last week?s romp at Kansas, open their firstseason in the Mountain West Conference by hosting Air Force Saturday afternoon at 4p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. The Aztecs are returning toQualcomm Stadium for the first time since the opener (Sept. 4th). SDSU is 2-2 for thefirst time since 1995.

Storyline
The contest is an important early-season meeting in the Mountain West Conference. Preseason prognostications tabbed Air Force and San Diego State as two contenders for the first MWC crown. The game features America?s third-best rushing team (Air Force at 307 yards per game) against the nation?s No. 11 rushing defense (San Diego State at 68.8 yards allowed).

Qual ?calm?
The Aztecs carry a five-game home winning streak into Saturday?s game. San Diego State is 7-1 in its last eight league games in Mission Valley. SDSU is trying win six straight home games for the first time since ?96. That streak reached seven with the ?97 opener.

? Ted Tollner is in his sixth season as head coach of the Aztec football program. In1998, Tollner was recognized as the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division"Coach of the Year" for his efforts in leading SDSU to 7-5 record, a share of the WACPacific Division championship and the school's first bowl appearance in seven years.

? He has compiled a 34-28 overall record (.548) at SDSU, including a 2-2 start in1999. In his career, Tollner has amassed a record of 60-48-1 (.550), which includesfour bowl berths (and a Rose Bowl title).

? San Diego State posted its first non-conference road win in almost two decades (Nov.14, 1981 at UNLV, 38-20) last week in a 41-13 rout over Kansas in Lawrence.

? With the 28-point margin of victory, SDSU has won by an average of 28.5 points inits two victories this season.

? SDSU piled up 572 yards on 74 offensive plays (7.7 ypp), including 343 through theair on 19-of-24 passing by junior quarterback Jack Hawley.

? The Aztec defense also flexed its muscles, limiting the Jayhawks to just 181 yardsof total offense, including zero net rushing yards on 26 carries.

? SDSU took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards on 13 plays to take an early 7-0lead. The drive was capped by a five-yard Hawley to Damon Gourdine TD strike. It wasalso the first time this season that the Aztecs have scored on their openingpossession.

? Larry Ned scored the first of two touchdowns on the game on SDSU?s next possession,polishing off another 80-yard drive with a one-yard run up the middle to give theAztecs a 14-0 advantage late in the first quarter.

The Aztecs also scored on their third possession of the game, this time going 94yards on seven plays. Sean Pierce hauled in a 22-yard touchdown pass from Hawley forthe score and with 4:07 still to play in the first half, SDSU?s lead had swelled to21-0.

? Just 2:22 later, SDSU was back on the scoreboard, as Hawley hit a streaking DerrickLewis deep over the middle on a 62-yard bomb to give the Aztecs a 28-0 advantage.Another Hawley to Lewis hookup, this time a 49-yard connection to the KU nine-yard-line with time running out, led to a 22-yard Nate Tandberg field goal and the half?sfinal points.

? Kansas posted a pair of second half scores and SDSU answered with a touchdown andfield goal of its own to account for the second half scoring and the 41-13 finalscore.

Captain Jack
? Making only his second collegiate start, junior quarterback Jack Hawley shreddedthe Jayhawk defense for 343 yards on 19-of-24 passing (79.2 percent). He also tossedthree touchdown passes, including a 62-yard strike to junior Derrick Lewis. He was notintercepted.

? Hawley?s 343 yards passing at Kansas was the best performance by an SDSU quarterbacksince Kevin McKechnie threw for 371 yards in a 45-31 Aztec win over Navy Sept. 5,1997. It was also the first time SDSU has passed for more that 300 yards in a gamesince that victory over the Midshipmen ? a span of 23 games.

? In Hawley?s four games on SDSU?s roster, the Aztecs are averaging over a touchdown agame more than they did last year. This season, SDSU is averaging 28.3 points pergame, compared to 20.9 points per game in 1998.

? Hawley enters the Air Force game with a 125.72 quarterback efficiency rating. He hasconnected on 52-of-90 (57.8 percent) passing attempts this season for 666 yards andfour touchdowns.

Breaking Out
? Senior Jonas Lewis led all rushers last week with 103 yards on 14 carries, includinga career-long 64-yard burst that led to a third-quarter Aztec touchdown. It was thefirst 100-yard rushing effort of the season for the senior and his first since heposted 112 yards on 27 carries against UTEP on Nov. 21, 1998. Last season, Lewis ledthe Aztecs in rushing with 897 yards on 181 carries (5.0 ypc) and topped the 100-yardplateau four times en route to second team All-WAC honors.

The Ned Zone
? After scoring only four touchdowns in his inaugural season on Montezuma Mesa a year ago, junior running back Larry Ned now has six in 1999, including a pair last week on runs ofone and four yards at Kansas. Itwas the second two-touchdown game of the year for Ned, who also cashed in a pair in the season opener against South Florida. With 36 points sofar this season, Ned ranks 22nd in the nation in scoring with an average of nine pointsper game.

Go-Go Gourdine
? Senior wide receiver Damon Gourdine continues to be the favorite target of Aztecquarterbacks. At Kansas, Gourdine hauled in a season-best eight receptions for 79yards and a score. The Aztecs? leading pass-catcher, with 20 receptions for 222 yards(11.1 ypc) and two touchdowns, Gourdine is responsible for over 28 percent of SDSU?scompletions in 1999.

? Gourdine?s first quarter five-yard touchdown versus the Jayhawks was the second timethis season that he has been the first Aztec into the endzone. He also caught a 20-yard touchdown pass against USF to give SDSU an early 7-0 lead. The Aztecs have goneon to win both games.

? With his eight catches at Kansas, Gourdine extended his consecutive games with areception streak to eight. His last game without a catch was on Oct. 29, 1998, at BYU.

Big Play Man
? Junior wide receiver Derrick Lewis is emerging as the Aztecs? big-play option in1999. Lewis, who ranks second on the team with nine receptions for 222 yards, isresponsible for SDSU?s three longest passing plays of the season ? all of whichresulted in Aztec points.

? At Kansas, Lewis snared a 62-yard touchdown strike midway through the second quarterto give SDSU a 28-0 lead. On the very next possession, the JC transfer out ofSacramento City College pulled down a 49-yard pass just before intermission that ledto a 22-yard Nate Tandberg field goal with no time left on the clock.

? The previous week at USC, Lewis hauled in a 45-yard Hail Mary reception that pulledSDSU within 10 points of the Trojans as the gun fired to signal the end of the firsthalf.

? With three receptions for 121 yards versus the Jayhawks, Lewis has now caught ninepasses for 222 yards ? an eye-popping average of 24.7 yards per reception.

Tough Yardage
? Tight end Jim Ange?s 26-yard second-quarter reception at Kansas was a career-long reception for the senior fro Thousand Oaks, Calif., and helped maintain an SDSUscoring drive.

Oh, Brother
? Junior defensive end Akbar Gbaja-Biamila made his first career start at Kansas andfinished the game with three tackles, including one for minus two yards. His startalso marked the first time since 1995 that SDSU has had a brother tandem in itsstarting lineup. The last time that occurred was at BYU on Sept. 16, 1995, when La?Roiand Darcel Glover started at defensive end and linebacker, respectively, for theAztecs. In its history, SDSU has had nine brother tandems make at least one start inthe same game.

Rough and Ready
? Senior middle linebacker Joey Mayo is finally healthy and it showed at Kansas lastweek. Mayo, who has struggled this season with a groin injury and a quad contusion,led all Aztec tacklers with nine stops (seven unassisted), including one for loss. Healso forced a Jayhawk fumble. For the season, Mayo ranks second on the team with 31tackles.

Curtis Records Pick
? Senior strong safety Rico Curtis recorded his sixth career interception at Kansaslast week. It is the first of the season for the Jim Thorpe Award and All-Americacandidate, whose last pick came against Fresno State on Nov. 7, 1998.

Automatic Inside 40
? Nate Tandberg, who connected on field goals of 22 and 25 yards last week, is now aperfect 5-for-5 on field goals inside 40 yards. His only misses on the year are a 52-yarder at Kansas and a 40-yard try at Illinois. Tandberg is also perfect on PATs thisseason (14-14).

Iron Men
? Senior center Mike Malano and senior defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila eachextended their consecutive game starting streaks against Kansas. Malano has nowstarted 39 consecutive games for the Aztecs, while on the other side of the ball,Gbaja-Biamila is currently in the midst of a 28-game starting streak.

? With two tackles against Kansas, senior strong safety Rico Curtis now has 27 tacklesfor the season and 299 (7.9 per game) for his Aztec career. That figure ranks third onSDSU?s all-time total tackles chart. Although it is doubtful that he could make enoughstops to wrest the top spot from Whip Walton, who tallied 407 tackles from 1974-77, heonly needs 29 to surpass No. 2 Jason Moore (328 from 1994-97). If Curtis keeps makingstops at his current pace, that could happen as soon as the Utah game on Oct. 23 inSalt Lake City.

? Senior Jonas Lewis continued his climb up SDSU?s all-time rushing chart last weekwith 103 yards on 14 carries. He now ranks fifth in rushing with 2,248 yards and needsjust 141 yards to catch Wayne Pittman (2,389 from 1991-94) in the No. 4 position. His14 carries also moved him into the No. 4 slot in career carries with 480. Last season,Lewis carried the ball 181 times for 897 yards. A duplicate season would move the 1998second team All-WAC performer into the No. 2 position all-time in both rushing yardageand rushing attempts. Both records are currently held by Aztec legend Marshall Faulk,who rushed for 4589 yards on 766 attempts between 1991-93.

Damon Gourdine
? Senior wide receiver Damon Gourdine hauled in a team-high eight catches for 79 yardsand a touchdown, including a long of 18 yards, at KU. He now has 96 receptions for hiscollegiate career. That figure is just 26 catches behind Webster Slaughter, whose 122receptions ranks 10th on the all-time list.? Gourdine is also close to creeping into the Aztecs? all-time top-10 in both kickoffreturn and punt return yardage. To date, he has returned three kicks for 55 yards(18.3 average) to give him 577 yards for his career, 33 behind No. 10 Art Preston (610from 1949-51). Gourdine also has returned six punts this season for 32 yards (5.2average) and needs just 16 more yards to catch No. 10 Craig Scoggins (341 from 1965-66) in that category. Last season, Gourdine ranked second in the nation in punt returnyardage with an average of 18.4, including two he returned for scores.
