Hawley Tabbed MWC Offensive Player of the Week

Sept. 27, 1999

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior quarterback Jack Hawley (L.A. Harbor JC/El Segundo HS) was selected as the Mountain West Conference?s (MWC) Offensive Player of the Week for his performance at Kansas last week. It is the first MWC Player-of-the-Week award for any SDSU student-athlete since the conference was formed in July.

Making only his second collegiate start, Hawley shredded the Jayhawk defense for 343 yards on 19-of-24 passing (79.2 percent). He also tossed three touchdown passes, including a 62-yard strike to junior Derrick Lewis, and was not intercepted.

Hawley?s 343 yards passing was the best performance by an SDSU quarterback since Kevin McKechnie threw for 371 yards in a 45-31 Aztec win over Navy Sept. 5, 1997. It was also the first time SDSU has passed for more that 300 yards in a game since that victory over the Midshipmen ? a span of 23 games.

The effort also raised his quarterback efficiency rating from 83.99 over 40 points. He enters the Air Force game with a 125.72 rating and has connected on 52-of-90 (57.8 percent) passing attempts for 666 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.
