SAN DIEGO - Santa Clara, ranked second in the nation this week, proved too much for a young San Diego State side as it defeated the Aztecs, 4-1, in first-round action at the Nike-Coca Cola Classic in Santa Clara Thursday night.
With the win, the Broncos maintained their perfect record on the season as they improved to 7-0, The loss was SDSU?s third straight and lowered its season mark to 2-5.
Santa Clara got first-half goals from Keith Burden and Anthony Chimienti to take a 2-0 lead at the break as the Broncos outshot SDSU 11-0 over the first 45 minutes.
The Aztecs climbed back into the game on a goal by senior Darren Parker off a pass from Milton Economy in the 53rd minute to cut the Bronco lead in half. It was the first goal allowed by the Broncos in seven games this season. However, Santa Clara was able to stave off the Aztec comeback while getting a second goal from Chimienti in the 76th minute and another from Jeff Stewart with under nine minutes left to play.
Aztec freshman goalkeeper Brian Barnes made a season-high nine saves as the host team outshot SDSU 20-7 on the night.
Up next for San Diego State is a contest with University of San Francisco on Saturday (Sept. 25) at 6:00 p.m. in second round action of the tournament at Santa Clara.
