SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men?s soccer team got first-half goals from Ralph Dartt and Nathan Ekenberg to defeat visiting Hope International University, 2-0, in a game played at the ARCO Olympic Training Center Tuesday afternoon.
The win evened the Aztecs? record at 2-2. Hope International, an NAIA institution located in Fullerton, fell to 1-3.
Dartt?s goal came in the sixth minute of the game and was set up by freshman Travis Baker who flicked on Kyle Wiggs? corner kick to Dartt at the far post. Ekenberg?scored in the 18th minute, volleying in a cross from the right wing teammate Brett Lasby.
The Aztecs outshot the Hope International by a 21-8 margin. However, the Royals had a chance to climb back into the game when they were awarded a penalty kick in the game?s 74th minute. But they were thwarted by SDSU goalkeeper Adam Dietz, who dove to his right to save Kevin Thomas?s attempt.
Hope International goalie Roger Pe?a made five saves during the contest while Dietz was called upon to make a pair.
The Aztecs next travel to Las Vegas this coming weekend to participate in the Coors Soccer Classic hosted by UNLV. SDSU will meet Gonzaga on Friday (Sept. 17) at 9:00 p.m., then take on Maryland-Baltimore County Sunday (Sept. 19) at 2:00 p.m.
