SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team won its second straight game by defeating Cincinnati, 5-0, on Sunday at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
The Aztecs (5-1 overall), who are ranked 17th in the nation by Soccer America magazine, jumped on the Bearcats (3-1 overall, 1-0 Conference USA) early, as freshman midfielder Michele Wagner scored the first goal of her collegiate career just 57 seconds into the game when she found the back of the net off a corner kick taken by junior Fay deLeon.
After surrendering the early score, Cincinnati rebounded strong, keeping SDSU pinned on defense for much of the next 10 minutes. Despite controlling the action, the Bearcats came out of the flurry empty handed. The Aztecs would capitalize on Cincinnati's inability to finish, as sophomore midfielder Kate Qually gave SDSU a 2-0 lead when she scored her first career goal at the 19:14 mark on a difficult flick following a volley from sophomore defender Carrie Hawkins.
The Aztecs went on to dominate the action for the remainder of the game, as Qually would add two more goals in the contest to record the fourth hat trick in SDSU history and the first since teammate Lori LaCoursiere scored three times against Fresno State on September 2, 1996.
The Bearcats, who had only yielded three goals all season coming into Sunday's contest, allowed the Aztecs to score three times in the first 23 minutes, and could have easily given up five goals by halftime if not for two spectacular saves by freshman goalkeeper Katrina Smolarczyk on one-on-one breakaway situations.
Another bright spot for SDSU was the return from injuries by senior defender Kelly Grogg and senior goalkeeper Katherine Judkins who both sat out Friday's game against Oklahoma. Judkins, who dislocated the ring finger on her left hand five minutes into the Aztecs' game against Long Beach State on September 1, entered the game three minutes and 20 seconds into the second half and did not have to make any saves.
Although Judkins and Grogg returned to action, injuries continue to be a nuisance for SDSU, as junior defender Alicia Orsini sat out with an injured knee and Wagner suffered a mild sprain of her right ankle at the 32:40 mark. She did not return to action following the injury.
The Aztecs will return to action at 3:00 p.m. on Friday when they battle #21 William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
