SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team improved to 4-1 on the year with a 2-0 win over Oklahoma on Friday at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
The Aztecs, who are ranked 17th in the nation by Soccer America , came out of the gates quickly, as senior forward Lori LaCoursiere scored her fourth goal of the season when she headed in a corner from junior Fay deLeon that was flicked on by senior Megan Mattes at the 2:40 mark.
SDSU went on to control the action for much of the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net, as the Sooners (1-4 overall, 0-2 Big 12) were able to fight off several opportunities created by junior midfielder Elicia Petre along the right wing.
Aztec junior sweeper Danielle Small went down midway through the first half after rolling her left ankle and sat out the remainder of the game, but SDSU - which was already shorthanded as senior midfielder Kelly Grogg and junior defender Alicia Orsini both sat out due to injury - managed to stay strong in the back.
The second half opened up much like as the first half ended, but midway through, Oklahoma began to take control of the action, but was unable to put the ball in the net. With the Sooners pressuring, the Aztec offense couldn't get going until de Leon found sophomore midfielder Kate Qually with a long clearance. Qually carried the ball down field and found Petre on the far post, who in turn put the game away at the 81:33 mark with her third goal of the season.
SDSU will return to action when it hosts Cincinnati at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at ARCO Training Center.
