Aztec Women's Volleyball Falls To No. 15 Arizona

Sept. 10, 1999

LINCOLN, Neb. - The San Diego State women's volleyball dropped their third-consecutive decision to start the 1999 season. The Aztecs fell to 15th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (5-1) 12-15, 9-15, 9-15 in the opening match of the US Bank Tournament, Friday night at the Nebraska Coliseum. Arizona freshman Shannon Torregrosa, a San Diego native, led both teams with 17 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Marisa DaLee added 11 kills for the Wildcats.

Senior Jamie Evans led SDSU, posting nine kills and nine digs. Junior outside hitter Amy Hallquist added eight kills, eight digs and four block assists for the Aztecs. SDSU will face tournament host and fifth-ranked Nebraska Huskers on Saturday, at 11 a.m. and South Florida at 5 p.m.

In game one Arizona took a 4-1 lead, but the Aztecs bounced back, outscoring the Wildcats 6-4 to tie the game at ten. Yet SDSU could not hold on to the momentum as UA regained possession on one of Torregrosa's 17 kills en route to a 15-12 win.

It appeared game two would be a blowout as the Wildcats jumped to a 14-3 lead. The Aztecs though would go on to score six unanswered points. SDSU cut the Arizona lead to 14-9, before another San Diego native and Mt. Carmel graduate, Jill Talbot stopped the Aztec momentum with a side out kill and a point game kill to secure the win.

Again, the Aztecs fell behind quickly in game three and would never be able to make a legitimate threat at Arizona. UA went on to win the third and final game 15-9.
