SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Aztec women?s soccer team opened its 1999 season with a 5-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara at the ARCO Olympic Training Center Friday afternoon in the season opener for both squads.. The Aztecs, ranked 13th in the pre-season by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), were led by senior Lori LaCoursiere who tallied two goals and an assist.
San Diego State opened the scoring in the 10th minute when newcomer Megan Mattes slotted home a pass from Kaycee McElree. Minute later, UCSB almost knotted the score when Kelly Mochel?s shot was cleared off the line by senior Kelly Grogg.
The Aztecs doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute with a solo effort from LaCoursiere who chipped over the Gaucho goalkeeper from 40 yards.
UC Santa Barbara took the initiative to open the second half, but the Aztecs put the game away on an unassisted effort by junior midfielder Danielle Small in the 72nd minute. LaCoursiere?s second goal 10 minute later was followed by freshman Nicole Hagouel scoring with four minutes left.
The Gauchos got a consolation goal with just under two minutes remaining when Tiffany Dawson latched onto a ball over the top from April Loveland and scored.
Aztec goalkeepers Katherine Judkins and Linnea Quinones each played one half and were not called upon to make any saves as the Aztecs outshot the Gauchos 18-3.
San Diego State returns to action on Wednesday, September 1, when they travel to Long Beach State for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
