Women's Tennis Improves to 3-0

SAN DIEGO - The 25th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team continued its winning ways on Friday, handing Long Beach State a 8-1 loss at SDSU's East Courts.

The Aztecs (3-0; 1-0 Western Athletic Conference), swept the 49ers (1-2) in doubles action, taking all three matches. SDSU had a solid showing in singles as well, winning 5-1.

Senior Dorota Wozniak made her first appearance of the year at the number one singles spot, defeating CSULB's Lara Spica in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Maggie Cole, who started the year at number one, beat the 49ers' Dianne Asis, 6-4, 6-1 at two. Sophomore Whitney Wells kept the ball rolling for the Aztecs at three, handing Connie Burggraf a 6-4, 6-2 loss. CSULB's lone point came at the number four singles spot, where Judy Esmero beat SDSU junior Lisa Papi, 6-1, 6-2. The Aztecs' most lopsided singles wins came at five and six, where junior Laura Aguero and freshman Julie Chidley won 6-0, 6-1, and 6-0, 6-0, over Jessica Perico and Melissa Hlebasko, respectively.

In doubles action, SDSU senior Sarah Donovan teamed with Cole to shut out Spica and Burggraf, 8-0 at one. At the number two doubles spot, Wells and Papi defeated Asis and Esmero, 8-2, while Aztec freshman Katey Becker paired with Chidley to defeat Perico and Hlebasko, 8-3.

SDSU's next match will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 5th, when it hosts UC Irvine at the East Courts.
