SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State University women's novice eight rowing team placed fourth in the 13th annual Opening Day Regatta in Seattle, Wash. on May 1. The Windermere Cup Races is one of the largest rowing events in the world, and marks the opening day of yachting season in the Pacific Northwest.
On a wind shortened race, 1500 meters as opposed to 2000 meters, the Aztecs were bested by the University of Washington by close to a minute. Also competing against SDSU, who finished fourth, was Orange Coast College who came in third with a finish time of 6:14.64.
"It was quite a spectacle," said head coach Scott Steckel, "The crosswind was disastrous to our inexperienced team. That being said, I am still glad we went. The novices had the honor of being invited to compete in the regatta by the University of Washington, whose women's rowing team is ranked No.1 in the nation."
In the Windermere Cup varsity race, Washington beat out No.3 Brown University and The New Zealand National Team.
