SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team lost to the University of Hawaii, 66-39 on Saturday in Honolulu.
The Aztecs (6-18 overall; 3-9 Western Athletic Conference) struggled from the field in the first half, scoring only 13 points in the opening stanza, and the Rainbow Wahine (15-9 overall; 7-5 WAC) capitalized, taking a 30-13 lead into the tunnel at halftime.
Things wouldn't get much better in the second half for SDSU, as it fell behind by as much as 31 points on two separate occasions. The Aztecs shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the field in the contest while Hawaii shot 48.0 percent, hitting on 24-of-50 attempts.
SDSU sophomore forward Anita Bundage led the way for the Aztecs, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Rainbow Wahine forward Raylene Howard led all scorers with 22 points. She also hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Hawaii point guard B.J. Itoman also recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and dishing out 10 assists.
Despite the loss, SDSU is still in the WAC Tournament picture. With Fresno State's 60-58 loss on Saturday at Utah, the Aztecs and Bulldogs remain tied for sixth in the WAC's Pacific Division with a 3-9 record. Only one of the two teams will qualify for the tournament.
SDSU's fate will be decided next weekend when it travels to Fresno to battle the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 25th. When the two teams met at Cox Arena on January 30th, the Aztecs won, 89-68. SDSU will end its regular season when it takes on San Jose State at 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 27th in San Jose.
