SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team ended its season on a high note on Saturday, beating San Jose State, 78-46 in San Jose.
The Aztecs (7-19 overall; 4-10 Western Athletic Conference) forced 32 Spartan turnovers and shot well from the free-throw line, draining 22-of-34 attempts en route to claiming the victory.
SJSU (2-25 overall; 0-14 WAC) struggled from the field in the first half, converting on only eight out of 28 shots (28.6 percent). SDSU capitalized on the Spartans poor shooting, going on a 17-0 run midway through the first half and going into the locker room with a 40-19 lead at halftime. During the Aztecs' run, they held SJSU without a field goal for 6:09.
It was more of the same in the second half, with the Spartans only making 35.7 percent of their shots from the field (as opposed to the Aztecs 51.7 percent). SDSU extended its lead to as much as 34 at one point in the second half, and didn't let SJSU within 20 points at any point in the second stanza.
The Aztecs were led by junior guard Kaly Gillette and freshman forward Claire Swinbank, each of whom finished with a game-high 13 points. Gillette capitalized on her chances from the charity stripe, draining all eight of her shots from the line, while Swinbank showed her versatility by knocking down five-of-seven from the field (including two-of-three from three-point land), and dishing out a game-high six assists.
In her final collegiate game, SDSU senior point guard Charley Murray finished with seven points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.
