SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team lost its third straight game on Thursday, falling to Utah, 64-42 at Cox Arena.
The Aztecs (6-16 overall; 3-7 Western Athletic Conference) fell victim to hot shooting from the Utes (17-4 overall; 8-1 WAC), who shot 54.3 percent from the field.
Utah outrebounded SDSU, 45-30 and capitalized on poor free-throw shooting by the Aztecs, who converted on only 5-of-18 attempts (27.8 percent) from the foul line.
Despite trailing by as much as 13 points in the first half, SDSU roared back in the second, cutting the Utes' lead to 37-36 with 11:03 remaining in the game. Clinging to a one point lead, Utah sophomore forward Lindsay Sodja drilled a three-pointer that ended the Aztecs' comeback. The Utes kept SDSU at bay for the remainder of the contest.
The Aztecs were led offensively by freshman forward Claire Swinbank, who scored a team-high 10 points and set a new career-high with four steals. Junior guard Sophia Sledge contributed with eight points and five assists. Junior center Mary Apiafi established a new career-best by grabbing 11 rebounds.
SDSU will conclude its home season on Saturday, February 13th when it battles BYU at 7 p.m. at Cox Arena. Point guard Charley Murray will be honored prior to the game, as she is the lone senior on this year's Aztec squad. The game is designated as Take a Girl to the Game Night. All children will be admitted free with paid adult admission.
