Women's Hoops Can't Tame Bruins

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team fell to 8th-ranked UCLA, 104-56, Friday at Cox Arena.

The Aztecs (2-6) put together a solid showing in the first half and went into the locker room down 44-36. However, the Bruins (6-2) busted the game open in the second half, shooting a torrid 71.4 percent (25-35) from the field in the final 20 minutes. SDSU was unable to answer UCLA's hot shooting, as the Aztecs shot 22.2 percent (8-36) from the field in the second stanza.

The Bruins, who have won their last six games, had seven players score in double figures. Forward Maylana Martin led UCLA with a game-high 18 points in only 18 minutes of play. Forward Marie Philman scored 15 points in the contest. Two Bruins posted double-doubles, as center Janae Hubbard scored 10 points and hauled in 12 rebounds, while point guard Erica Gomez scored 10 points while dishing out 11 assists.

UCLA's bench did its part, as center Carly Funicello and guard LaCresha Flannigan both finished with 14 points. Forward Michelle Greco scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. The game marked the third time this season in which the Bruins scored over 100 points in a game.

SDSU was led by freshman forward Kelly Rushford, who scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in her first collegiate start. Sophomore forward Anita Bundage scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Junior guard Sophia Sledge recorded 10 points and dished out 4 assists.

The Aztecs will host Boston College at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 21 at Cox Arena, while UCLA will travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 19.
