Women's Hoops Beats Detroit in Tournament Opener

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team defeated the University of Detroit, 78-59 on Friday in the first round of the Kansas State/Commerce Bank Classic in Manhattan, Kan.

The Aztecs (2-4) shot a season-best .436 from the field and .742 from the free-throw line and recorded a season-high 17 steals en route to limiting the Titans (0-6) to their lowest point total of the year. Detroit averaged 73.8 points per game entering Friday's contest, but struggled against SDSU, as the Aztecs forced 36 Titan turnovers.

SDSU was led by sophomore forward Anita Bundage, who scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Senior point guard Charley Murray established a new career best by draining five-of-eight three-pointers en route to finishing with 15 points.

Newcomers Kelly Rushford and Kaly Gillette also set new career highs in scoring. Rushford, a freshman forward, recorded 11 points. Gillette, a junior guard scored 10 points.

The Aztecs will play the winner of the Kansas State-Army game in the championship game at 7 p.m. (CST) on Saturday.
