Women's Hoops Back on Track

SAN DIEGO - The hot-shooting San Diego State women's basketball team defeated San Jose State, 89-51 in a Western Athletic Conference match-up on Thursday at Cox Arena.

The Aztecs (5-13; 2-4 WAC) shot 47 percent from the field and 82 percent (23-of-28) from the free throw line in the contest en route to handing the Spartans (2-17; 0-6 WAC) their 14th straight loss. SDSU forced SJSU to commit 30 turnovers in the game, and held the Spartans to 32 percent shooting in the contest.

The Aztecs put the game away in the first half, as they went on a 27-6 run over the last 8:23 of the opening stanza. SDSU dominated the low post during the first half, outscoring SJSU 24-2 in the paint. The Aztecs limited the Spartans to 4-of-23 shooting (17 percent) from the field in the first half. SDSU's bench provided a spark, outscoring SJSU's starters, 45-42.

Aztec junior guard Sophia Sledge led all scorers, tallying 23 points. She also dished out a game-high six assists and established a new career high with six steals. Freshman forward Kelly Rushford also made an impact for the Aztecs, scoring a career-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 shooting from the charity stripe.

SDSU will host Fresno State on Saturday, January 30th at 7 p.m. at Cox Arena.
