Scarlet and Black Swept By Bulldogs

SAN DIEGO -

Despite hitting its record-setting 14th home run of the season, the San Diego State softball team (18-21, 11-7 WAC) lost today, 6-3, to Fresno State (52-8, 21-0 WAC) at SDSU Field. The defeat, along with yesterday's two losses, mark the first time all season the Aztecs have been swept in a three-games series.

Early in the game, the Aztecs dug themselves into a hole they would never be able to climb out. Two San Diego State miscues, an error and a wild pitch, helped the Bulldogs jump out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning. With the help of two more Aztec errors, Fresno State scored three more unearned runs in the fourth, widening its lead to 6-0.

After being shut out the first two games of the series, SDSU scored in the fifth when Kellie Labor hit a solo home run over the right field fence. The junior designated player's second home run of the year was the team's 14th round-tripper of the season, eclipsing the old mark of 13 set in 1993. The Aztecs scored again in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 6-2 when freshman right fielder Kellie Nordhagen singled home junior left fielder Tami Simpson.

The Scarlet and Black scored one more run in the sixth when junior pinch runner Malina Contreras scored on sophomore shortstop Vanessa Villegas' single to right field.

San Diego State closes out the six-game homestand with its final home games of the season next weekend when the New Mexico Lobos invade SDSU Field for a three-game series. The series opens with a double header Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday, May 2 at noon.
