SAN DIEGO - The 32nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team defeated the University of San Diego, 5-2 at SDSU's East Courts on Saturday.
The Aztecs (11-3 overall; 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) lost the doubles point for only the second time all year, but they bounced back to claim five of the six singles matches from the Toreros (8-8 overall). SDSU's lone doubles win came at the number one spot, where junior Alex Waske and sophomore Adam Webster edged USD's German Maldonado and Ricardo Rizo, 9-8.
Four of the Aztecs' singles wins came in straight sets, with Waske, who is ranked 39th in the nation, defeating Rudy Rodriguez, 7-6, 6-1 at one, Webster beating Rizo, 6-4, 6-2 at two, senior Kolo Rosenthal getting past Sean Cooper, 6-4, 6-2 at three, and freshman Travis Hasson cruising by Ross Bourne, 6-2, 6-2 at six. Senior Nguey Lay rounded out the SDSU win with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 triumph over Mattias Tangefjord at three.
The Aztecs return to action on Tuesday, April 13, when they host the University of Nevada at 1:30 p.m. at the East Courts.
