SAN DIEGO - The 32nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team shut out the University of Nevada, 7-0 on Tuesday at SDSU's East Courts.
The Aztecs (12-3 overall; 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) pounced on the Wolf Pack early, sweeping the doubles point. Doubles play was highlighted by SDSU's Alex Waske and Adam Webster shutting out Nevada's John Bonficio and Thomas Hamrik, 8-0 at the number one position.
In singles play, every match was decided in straight sets. Waske, who is ranked 39th in the nation in singles, won his match over Nevada's Selim Baccar, 6-4, 6-1 at one, while Webster defeated Simon Jooste, 6-2, 6-3 at two. Convincing wins were the theme in this match-up, as Nguey Lay defeated Bonficio, 6-1, 6-3 at three and Kolo Rosenthal beat Brett Taite, 6-1, 6-0 at four. Aztec head coach John Nelson mixed things up at the number five and six spots, as he played Travis Hasson, who usually plays at six, at five. Hasson responded with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hamrik. Blair O'Hara, who has seen limited dual match action this year, stepped in with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jay Stearley at six.
SDSU returns to action when it hosts No. 45 UC Irvine at 1:30 on Thursday, April 15 at the East Courts. The two teams met last year, with the Aztecs claiming a 5-2 win in Irvine.
