The 32nd-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team won its third straight match on Thursday, defeating No. 45 UC Irvine, 4-3 at SDSU's East Courts.
The Aztecs (13-3 overall; 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) started things on the right foot by taking the doubles point. SDSU junior Alex Waske teamed with sophomore Adam Webster to defeat UCI's Brett Lucas and Andrew Cheney, 8-5 at one. The Aztecs' number two doubles team of seniors Nguey Lay and Kolo Rosenthal clinched the doubles point with a 8-6 win over Chris Ma and Chris Chung.
In singles play, Waske, who is ranked 39th in the nation, made quick work of the Anteaters' Thomas Bohun, winning 6-2, 6-2 at one. Rosenthal also enjoyed a quick win, disposing of David Mathews, 6-2, 6-2 at two. Down 3-0, UCI mounted a comeback. The Anteaters got wins at five and six, with Ma defeating SDSU's Travis Hasson, 6-2, 6-3, at five, and Chung defeating the Aztecs' Blair O'Hara, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at six. However, SDSU ended UCI's comeback and clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-4 win at three from Lay over Cheney.
The Aztecs will wrap up the regular season when they host No. 65 UNLV at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the East Courts.
