SAN DIEGO -The 27th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team suffered only its second home loss in two years when they fell to No. 42 Kansas, 5-2 on Tuesday.
The Aztecs (8-2 overall; 4-1 Western Athletic Conference) started the match on the right foot, sweeping the Jayhawks in doubles. Kansas turned things around in singles play, taking five of the six matches. SDSU's only singles win was a 6-4, 6-2 victory from Nguey Lay over the Jayhawks' Ed Dus at the number three spot.
The best match of the day came at the number one singles spot, where Kansas' Luis Uribe, who is ranked 21st in the nation, met up with the Aztecs' Alex Waske, who is ranked 36th.Uribe took the first set 6-4 and was leading 5-3 in the second set before Waske battled back to force a tiebreaker and eventually win the set. The third set proved to be as much of a battle as the second, as it too went to a tiebreaker. However, the result proved different, as Uribe came out on top to win the set and match.
SDSU will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to compete at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Tennis Classic, where it will take on Idaho in the first round. The Aztecs and Vandals met earlier in the year, with SDSU claiming a 5-2 win on February 27.
