SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team, ranked 24th in the nation in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, was stunned at home by No. 32 Tulsa, 5-2 on Tuesday.
The loss marked the first time since 1997 that the Aztecs (6-1 overall; 4-1 Western Athletic Conference) lost a match at SDSU's East Courts.
The Aztecs started the match on the right foot, taking the doubles point with an 8-4 win at the number two position by Nguey Lay and Kolo Rosenthal over the Golden Hurricane's Joel McGregor and Jeff Oldham, and an 8-6 victory Travis Hasson and Sean Walker over TU's Sean Monk and Shri Ranga Sudhaker.
However, Tulsa dominated singles play, allowing only one SDSU win, a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Adam Webster over Sean Monk. At the number one singles spot, the Golden Hurricane's Gareth Williams upset the Aztecs' Alex Waske, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. Joel McGregor kept the ball rolling for Tulsa with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kolo Rosenthal at two, while TU's Nenad Toroman beat SDSU's Nguey Lay, 6-3, 6-1 at three. Tulsa's Viljar Zilmer won a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 marathon over the Aztecs' Sean Walker at five, while the Golden Hurricane's Shri Ranga Sudhaker rounded out the action with a 6-4, 6-4 win over SDSU's Travis Hasson at six.
