SAN DIEGO - After the first day of play at the 1999 NCAA Men's Golf West Regional at the Omni Tucson National Golf Course (par 72, 7,025 yards) in Tucson, Ariz., the San Diego State men's golf team is in sixth-place. The Aztecs fired a team five-under par 293, 10 strokes off the leader, No. 7 Arizona State. Defending national champion UNLV is tied for second with the 1999 Western Athletic Conference champ Brigham Young at 288.
Leading the Scarlet and Black was senior James Stewart. The Hong Kong product is in a three-way tie for fifth-place after shooting a two-under 70. Senior Kurt Cassidy and sophomore Scott Piercy added solid performances, recording identical scores of 73 en route to a 19th-place tie. Junior Magnus Carlsson is tied for 67th-place after shooting a 77, while junior Gundy Jones shot a 78 on his way to a 76th-place tie.
Second round action from the 1999 NCAA West Regional continues tomorrow. The top-nine out of 18 teams qualify for the NCAA Championships.
