Men's Golf Finishes Ninth at Cougar Classic

In its final tune-up before the Western Athletic Conference Championships, the 48th-ranked San Diego State mens golf team finished ninth in the Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club (par 72, 7,001 yards) in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs shot a team 302-297-293-892, 42 strokes behind the winner, host No. 20 Brigham Young (855). No. 18 New Mexico finished second, firing a team 859, while Wyoming shot an 875 en route to a third-place finish.

The men from Montezuma Mesa were led by Kurt Cassidys 25th-place tie. The senior from Vancouver, Canada shot a 73-76-73-222. Other Aztecs performers included Scott Piercy (75-72-77-224), Larry Correa (75-72-77-224) and Magnus Carlsson (78-77-71-226).

Matt Peterson of Air Force took the individual title, firing a 69-70-70-209. Billy Harvey of BYU finished second with a 70-68-72-210, while New Mexicos D.J. Brigman shot a 78-67-68-213 en route to a third-place finish.

The Scarlet and Black head to Poppy Hillls Golf Course in Monterey, Calif for the 1999 WAC Championships Tuesday and Wednesday, May 4-5.
