Men's Golf Captures Third at Aldila Classic

The San Diego State men's golf team finished third out of 20 teams today at the Aldila Collegiate Classic held at Carlton Oaks Country Club (par 72, 7,000 yards) in Santee, Calif. Fueled by three top-8 individual performances, the Aztecs shot a team score of 291-294-303-884, 14 strokes behind the team champion, 16th-ranked Northwestern (288-288-298-874). Twentieth-ranked Brigham Young finished second (293-291-300) with a 10-over, 884.

The Men from Montezuma Mesa were led by Kurt Cassidy. The senior from Vancouver recorded a season-best, fifth-place tie after firing a 72-71-75-218. Junior Magnus Carlsson (73-73-74-220) and senior James Stewart (71-73-76-220) both had their best finishes of the spring season, finishing tied for eighth-place.

Last season's national freshman of the year, Northwestern's Luke Donald took the individual title, firing a three-under 70-69-74-213.

The Scarlet and Black also entered a JV team in the tournament. The JV squad shot a 306-306-323-935 on its way to a 17th-place finish. Sophomore Paul Becker led the way with a 24th-place tie, shooting a 74-71-80-225.

San Diego State returns to action March 21-23, when the Aztecs travel to Eugene, Ore. for the Oregon Duck Invitational.
